Any work-arounds for SFDC tasks failing when assigned to queues?

When the SFDC lead/contact owner is a queue (instead of an actual user), the task-creation external call fails (with an Assigned To ID: id value of incorrect type error). We are writing the task with the lead owner ID in the Assigned To ID field. It succeeds for leads assigned to a user.

 

My first guess was to run the queue lead-owner IDs through a lookup table to change them to the single user most responsible for that queue. Downside to that is the table would need to be manually updated whenever personnel changes. (Our SFDC admins also said they couldn't set the Assigned To field with a workflow or trigger.)


Has anyone else run into this problem and fixed it in a more elegant way?
